Robotics Team Intern
300+ Hour Experience
During the summer and fall of 2020, I spent 6 months working on the robotics team at Neuralink. I was responsible for needle cartridge production used in robot testing and brain surgery.
Neuralink is a biotech company based in the Bay Area that specializes in brain machine interfaces (BMI's). The company was founded in 2016 by a group of individuals, including Elon Musk.
Reflection
During the first three months of my internship, I learned a tremendous amount and drastically expanded my engineering knowledge. I decide to take a leave of absence from Duke in the Fall of 2020, and continue working at Neuralink throughout the semester. The internship was in person and very hands on. I learned how to use new machinery and manufacturing techniques including laser welding, electrochemical etching, and ultrasonic transducers.

As an intern, I was given a great amount of responsibility and design freedom. I learned how to work with suppliers, make effective part drawings, and carry and own projects from the brainstorming phase, through implementation, use, and debugging. I gained first hand experience using first principles logic and decision making. I designed and conducted tests for potential design solutions and used the results to aid decisions moving forward. I also improved my software skills and did data analysis to reach valuable conclusions.

The experience overall was excellent and I have deep gratitude to my team and mentor. I will be returning as a full time mechanical engineer in the fall of 2022.
